I have an Inspiron 9400 running Windows XP. Due to blue screen problems I had to reformat the hard drive and in so doing needed to reinstall everything. So far I am only having problems with the wireless connection. I can connect to an outside source but not to my own network that I have set up. In addition, from the systray I do not see the icon that monitors the connection speed. The icon I refer to is the one that looks like an upside down flask, and goes from yellow to green with the strength of the connection. What driver am I missing that I can't get this icon to reappear? This is the network I have installed:
I installed the drivers for the Intel Pro/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g mini card and Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem but I'm not sure what or if I should install the Dell WLAN driver. I live in Canada so should I install that one for Canada. What network does this icon represent? I'm confused with the Dell, Windows and Intel utilities.
I believe the flask you are referring to is the Intel Proset WLAN utility. It sounds like you installed the driver from Dell but not the utility program
That link should take you to the 9400 page and you want the top link for the Intel 3945 I believe it includes the utility and the bottom one is just the drivers, if not I know the Intel version works as well.
I am in Canada as well, either site works just as well.
You don't have a Dell wireless card, so you shouldn't install the drivers for the Dell Wireless card. You have an Intel wireless card, so you only need to install the drivers for that Intel card. The Dell Utilities would be required if you had the Dell wireless card, so you don't want to install the Dell utilities either. The Intel ProSet utility is necessary only if you have the Intel wireless card, which you do.
I downloaded R164255 which I believe is what I needed for my Inspiron 9400. There was also a ZIP File on Intel's site VII.I.I.O_XP Drivers that I installed. However, I get a message say something about not belonging to the "Family". I also get a message indicating that I an error message for "connmgr.dll"?
I believe I have installed the correct drivers. I have the original CD sent with the system but when I look at the Drivers for the Intel Pro 100 it doesn't say they are for the 9400/E1705 and all the drivers listed are not for the 3945ABG. Why can this be?
Should I be removing the Device from the Device Manager, and have Windows recognize new hardware and then install the drivers? Can anyone give me the specific drivers I should be installing?
I appreciate all the help I can get. It's been an exasperating month with all the problems with this Inspiron 9400.
