Dr Watsons Error

Hi all,

SpotCheckBilly from the HijackThis board suggested I post my problem here, as it appears my system is clear of spyware/malware, and I am still getting the Dr Watsons error message when I try to do simple tasks on my desktop.

Please see below for my latest Hijack This log.

Could someone please assist me with this problem.

Thanks
Gazman22

    Gazman22,

Can you tell us a little more about the Dr. Watson crashes? First of all, when they happen, do several of them happen in rapid succession, one right after the other? If the Dr. Watson window only appears once, there's an option to "Tell Microsoft about this error". If you see such a message, don't tell Microsoft, but instead click on the "Details" button, and post back with all of the information shown in the details.

Here's a brief article from Microsoft Support describing what Dr. Watson is, and what it does. We may need to look at the "drwtsn32.log" file created by one of the crashes. In its default configuration, Dr. Watson places the log file in this directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson. Can you check to see if such a log file exists in that directory, and if it does, let us know how large the file is? Don't post it yet, though.

Did this problem begin right after you installed Service Pack 2, or somewhat later? If it was later, do you recall any changes that were made to the system right before the problem began?

Here's a link to the original thread.

(edit to insert Microsoft article URL)
(edit #2, to ask an additional question and post a link to the original thread)

    Jim

    Hi Jim,

thanks for the info.  In response to your questions:

    1) The crash usually occurs when I am performing very basic functions.  Primarily when I choose to delete a shortcut from the desktop (or a folder on the desktop), or when I open a folder full of mp3's and select 'play all'.  The problem does not occur if I manually open WMP, and choose to Open mp3 files.

    2) The problem occured straight after I installed SP2.  At the same time I set up a wireless network in my house, so I installed the software for the Netgear wireless card.

As soon as I get home and jump on the computer I will post the size of the log and also what contents of the error message.

    Thanks for your help

    Jim,

sorry about the delay.  The size of the log file is 2,650kb.  The error signature from the error message is:

    EventType : BEX P1 : DRWTSN32.EXE P2 : 5.1.2600.0 P3 : 3b7d84a2

    P4 : dbghelp.dll P5 : 5.1.2600.2180 P6 : 4110969a P7 : 0001295d

    P8 : c0000409 P9 : 00000000

    What's the verdict?
    Thanks

    NemesisDB,

sorry about the lateness of my reply.  I have looked for the Dell Support Centre application, but it doesn't appear to be on the computer.  It is not in the Add/Remove Programs menu, nor can I uninstall it in the Start menu.

Any ideas on how to find and uninstall it?

    Thanks for your assistance

    James

    Gazman22,

Thanks for the error signature. It indeed shows that drwtsn32.exe itself crashed, and inside dbghelp.dll, the same DLL as the others that have been reported.

The reason the log file is so large is that error reports are being appended to it. Let's save that one, and let drwtsn32 start a new one, so we get fresh data next time a crash occurs. You can do that by right-clicking on the log file and selecting "Rename". Name it "drwtsn32.log.1" or something similar.

Then, next time a crash occurs, record and post all the information in the "Details" page, and the entire log contents. Hopefully it will be much shorter than the current one.

One question you didn't answer - are you seeing repeated crashes of Dr. Watson (one right after another) like the other poster did, or is your symptom different?

    JimW,

looks like we may be getting somewhere.  In answer to that question I forgot to answer, it's only a single crash.  Most of the time I can close an application that is running (using Ctrl-Alt-Del), and the computer will be up and running fine until I try to do one of those simple tasks that will cause a Dr Watson error again.  On the odd occassion I need to restart the computer.

When I get home tonight I will post the requested information.

    Cheers

    Gazman22,

Thanks for the update. Hopefully we'll be able to determine from drwtsn32.log what causes the first crash.

You should send the drwtsn32 crash information to Microsoft if possible. I suspect they'd be very interested in seeing detail about what's causing that crash. As I've said before, debuggers like drwtsn32.exe should never crash!

Most of the time I can close an application that is running (using Ctrl-Alt-Del), and the computer will be up and running fine...

You should see if there are any patterns associated with what application(s) you need to terminate. If there seems to be a pattern, report the name(s) of the application(s) that are misbehaving.

    Jim,

at face value, it appears that there is no pattern to what application crashes.  E.g. last night the computer froze whilst i had everything minimised (an IE window and Windows Explorer) and was deleting a shortcut from my desktop.  The computer was fine once I hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and Ended Windows Explorer (despite the fact Windows said it was running fine).  Similarly, in any given situation, I think as long as I close something, then the computer will get back up and running.

As I said, will post log tonight.

    Cheers
