Folder Options Control Panel??

Okay, I don't know what happened.  One minute I was running a new SpyBot Scan and it was fixing the problems...next thing I know I cannot access hardly anything in my computer.  When I am offline I cannot access anything in my startmenu, or my desktop, even things like Word Perfect, or the control panel!!  When I am online I cannot access things like MSN Messenger or Yahoo.  On a whim I thought maybe I just had to redownload them, that didn't work either.  The message that pops up when I try to open anything is this, "This file does note have a program associated with it for performing this action.  Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel."  Someone PLEASE HELP ME!!  I thought I was doing a good thing and ridding my pc of all that junk!!  Help!!

SpyBot traditionally creates a backup at some point.  You could try to access this backup.  Another option, depending on what OS you have, is to use System Restore.  It is under "Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools", "System Restore" in XP.  Just follow the onscreen instructions once it starts if you have never used it before.  There is a good chance it will work.  Other then that, depending on what the damage is, I personally might just reformat, but only if nothing else works and you have all the software on disk.  That's just me though.

Thanks for the info, however, when I try to use the system restore it pops up the same message I stated in the original post.  It does that for most anything I try to open.  I must have deleted something that opens up exe files or something.  I cannot open up SpyBot or the Adware software to restore what I dumped because it pops up the same message then, too.  Any further suggestions?  Thanks.

hmm..didn't know if you still might have been able to get to it.  It was worth a shot.  Don't know if you have any experience with DOS, but if you put around in there you might be able to find the missing file.  There is also a way to restore from the command prompt, but I think you might need to use the "Run" option to do it and I don't remember the exact command.  I don't think it's that you erased the program to open other programs though.  If it was that then you wouldn't be able to start windows at all.  You get a nasty little message and you have to boot into DOS to fix it.  Just out of curiousity, have you/can you restart?

Yes, I can and have restarted several times since then.  I cannot get into system restore or just about any other program.  Even when I start up the internet and get ready to sign on, it tells me that it needs to reinstall something to make the media software work and asks me if I want to do it.  When I say yes and it begins a download it stops and the same message about Folder Options pops up.  Is there any other way for me to do a system restore without being able to access it from the programs menu?  I looked through the disks I have with my pc from purchase and I don't see a restore disk.  I remember an old pc I had once had a quick restore disk, I wonder why the dell doesn't?  UGH!!!

All Dells, at least the ones sold in the last about five years, come with a restore disc.  Actually, it's just the OS.  What OS are you using anyway?  You can run a system restore from DOS. You need to boot into DOS though.  If you don't have a boot disk go to http://www.bootdisk.com

At the A:\> prompt type     C:                                    Press enter.
Now type:             cd windows\command                 Press enter.
    You should see    C:\Windows|Command
Now type:         scanreg /restore       (note the space between g and /)     Press enter.
Select a date PRIOR to your issue.                                                                 Press enter.
When the process is complete, reboot without the Floppy.

If that date doesn't work try using an earlier one.  Hope that helps.

Ok, I really admit to being computer stupid....what is OS?  I'll tell you which one I am using when I know what it is!!

Also, do you need a disk to restart into DOS mode?  I thought you just had to hold down a certain key or something when you restarted and that would bring it up.

Forgive my ignorance.  It is what got me into this mess as it is!

Sorry for taking so long to reply, but I was having major computer problems of my own.  Anyway, OS stands for Operating System, aka Windows.  Since you have a Dell it should be running some version of Windows.  As for not needing a boot disk, if you hold down "F8" when the computer is booting up you will get different boot options.  The thing is though, I have heard some say that you can get into DOS from there and others say you can't, and I haven't done it in a while so I really don't remember.  I think it also depends on the OS whether or not you can.  Boot disks are really simple though.  Just load the files onto a floppy, stick the floppy in, start the machine, and when it asks how to start just tell it to start without CD-ROM support (it should start a little faster then if you tell it to start with CD-ROM support) and that will bring you to the command prompt.  When you want to start in the command prompt just hit "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" Hope this helps, good luck.

    Hello, Crystalee.

I'm having the same problem after running SpyBot  and have not been able to return to a backup point.  What I have found is a way to run my programs from the icons:

    1. Right click on the icon

    2. Choose "run as"

    3. Click on the "protect my computer" line to uncheck the box.

    4. Click "okay" and the program will open.

Does this have any unknown consequences?  Don't know.  Have been using this method for 2 weeks without apparent problem.  Others I have talked to are completely baffled by this problem.  Hope this helps.
