The ethernet controller on my gx270 does not work. I have tried the drivers off the dell website but it still does not work. I use windows xp(sp2). Please help. thanks
yes, I did just recently install XP and i have installed both those drivers multiple times. Under device manager the Ethernet controller comes up as Intel(R) Pro/1000 MT Network Connection #2 with a yellow exclamation point next to it and says, "This device cannot start(code10)."
After installing the chipset drivers and downloading the driver for the Ethernet controller, did you delete the previous Ethernet controller driver installation and reboot the machine? As I'm sure you've discovered, Microsoft's documentation for device manager error codes isn't very helpful.
I wonder if the BIOS isn't correctly allocating resources for the NIC. Try turning the NIC off in the BIOS and then booting. After XP boots (but with no sign of the NIC!), do a full shutdown/power off, and afterward re-enable the device in the BIOS.
If that doesn't do it, try a full reset of the BIOS settings. That's done as follows:
1. Inside the BIOS setup, Press ALT+F. You should hear a beep, and the menus may change slightly if you have upgraded your BIOS since the last BIOS reset.
2. Check all the BIOS settings and make sure they are right (especially the date, time and CPU hyperthreading).
3. Press ESC.
4. Select Save Changes and Reboot.
I wonder if the NIC driver correctly handles hyperthreading. That's another BIOS setting to look at.
I suspect the BIOS is current, since the most recent one Dell lists is A06, dated 1 October 2004. If not, you might want to take a look at the
A06 release notes and see if you spot anything relevant. I didn't.
Is there anything flagged as a "problem" device or incorrectly identified in XP's device manager?
Other than those, I've pretty much run out of ideas. If anyone has more, please join in!
now when I boot up it says NIC Failure. Under device manager it says the ethernet controller is PCI bus 1 but shouldnt it not be because it is integrated? Just a thought.

I have many gx240, gx260, gx270, and gx280. I have 2 240's and 2 brand new gx280's with the same problem. THey are dropping packets from large print jobs(over 1/2 mb). I had the machines replaced and received 2 new Motherboards for these models. None of these things worked. I did not reload Windows on the 280's becuase they were new. Ended up putting in generic Gigabit pci cards in machines and that fixed the problem. I suspect that there is a problem with their integrated NIC or the BIOS update for these models. I do not have time to fool with the machines for they are mission critical. If they do have to come down, I will do more experimenting with them.
Sigh...yep, the fact that integrated NICs have become so popular doesn't change the fact that they're much more tightly coupled to the support chipset on the motherboard and the BIOS. The data loss behavior sounds like it could involve interrupt handling problems, or even DMA problems involving transferring data from the NIC to memory. All very low-level and nasty, unfortunately.

Did you reinstall XP? If so, you'll need the XP chipset drivers for the Gx270 before the integrated NIC will be recognized. Judging from the XP download offerings for the Gx270, the NIC driver you want is the one described as "Intel Gigabit LOM".
