Help getting modem to work...

My friend's hard drive went out and had to be replaced.  I reinstalled winxp and everything else I could think of.  All is well except it doesn't detect the modem.  Under the system hardware, it shows an exclamation by "pci simple communications controller".  I've tried to download the driver from the Dell drivers and utilities disk AND from Dell's website.  It didn't work.  I also read on a forum about making sure the Intel chipset was installed/updated.  I did that, also.  I'm using a wireless usb to get on the internet on it right now, but my friend only has dial-up access so I really need the modem.  What's the trick?  Thanks!

Have you tried uninstalling the modem in Device Manager and restarting WinXp to see if it will be re-installed/recognized?

Yes--I probably did that 2 or 3 times.  About the only thing I didn't do was physically pull out the modem and reinsert it.  Although I did check to make sure it was inserted properly.  Thanks for the response.

In Device Manager, open Modems, right click on the modem, properties, click on Resources tab---is there a conflict?

Also, have you checked with the modem manufacturer's website for updated drivers?

I pulled out the modem to see what was written on it.  It may have not been original equipment.  I didn't even think of that.  Anyway, I found the driver, downloaded, and installed, and it works!  Thanks for the responses.

the first thing you need to do when the modem is detected and the driver isnt getting installed is...

    guess what...

RESEAT THE MODEM. after a reinstallation of the OS the modem is usually not detected by the computer.

you now know what worked right? when you pulled the modem out to get the number... you actually reseated. after a reseat the modem, its not detecting the modem its the modem h/w that got fried.

sorry wasnt able to help you earlier but glad you got it working :)
