my lan connection wont stay connected. Every 5 seconds it says cable is unplugged when its actually still plugged in. Please help i have to connect to the net asap.
We need a little more detail. Did this just start all of a sudden? Did you change something? Did you just hook this connection up? What are you using to connect to your internet? If it is wireless, this could be a problem with your wireless signal to your AP or router. If it is a wired conenction, what are you connected to?
I have a Lan internet connection provided to me on campus at school. I shut down my computer for an update one day and then when i rebooted it began to give me messages that my lan was not connected. The lan seems to connect and disconnect every few seconds. The message it gives says that the local area network is not connected. I have tried to use other people's ethernet cords and jacks to see if it was only my cord but everyone elses works except mine and my computer still doesnt work with their cords. The problem has to be something to do with my actual computer. I did not change any of my computer settings, i only did an update and restarted. Any help with this problem will be highly appreciated.
Is this a desktop PC? So you tried cables that you know worked fine. The next step (if possible) would be to try a jack that you knew worked fine, to rule out your connection to the switch(or hub). Does one of your friends have a Notebook that you could try in your jack? If you can rule out your connection to your wired switch then I would focus on your network card. You can also take a look at this Microsoft KB article.
If you hold the ethernet cable in the ethernet port, does it make the problem go away? If so, then it is likely a loose connection in the port itself. If you are still under warranty, Dell will likely have to replace the motherboard. If not under warranty, you might want to consider getting a PC Card etherent adapter, depending on which model laptop you actually have.
See if you have a TCP/IP address by taking the following steps:
Start | Run "cmd" [ press Enter key ]
You will get a black DOS "pane" and type
C: [Enter key]
CD \ [Enter key]
MD DOWNLOAD [Enter key]
CD DOWNLOAD [Enter key]
IPCONFIG /ALL >My.txt [Enter key]
EXIT [Enter key]
You can now go to "My Computer" and the "C:" drive and look in the folder DOWNLOAD for the "My.txt" and read it in notepad (or wordpad) and see what it says about your configuration. If there is no TCP/IP address then something is not working right with DHCP (which assigns your address dynamically). The best.
