After upgrading to the new Intel 2915ABG driver (version 9.0.4.17, Dell package A13) it seems something is really wrong.
The process "s24evmon.exe " seems to leak memory, after about 1 hour running, it collected over 152 MB of RAM. Even when Wifi was turned off via the switch all that time, but the amount of used RAM just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
Is this a known problem? If so, is there any workaround?
Yes there is a memory leak in the s24evmon.exe and Intel knows about it. They are working on a fix but do not have a release date as of the other day. I have created a cmd file that is run through scheduler every hour that runs the following commands as a work around.
net stop "Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless Service" net start "Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless Service"
I downloaded Intels driver last nite, removed and reloaded, and watched S24EvMon grow from 150M (already pretty big, but only 10M is resident in memory) to 500M (120M resident) in 12 hours. I used Process Explorer from Sysinternals to monitor it. It *might* be growing slower than it did before, but it is growing.
IS the software updated on intel's site? I noticed the date on the site might have changed but the file name is the same. I will use that software if it is fixed. I have removed all proset wireless software and am only using the driver currently, but would like to use the proset software if the memory leak is fixed. please advise.
Yep, I've noted the problem on my 3945abg too. Happened with the last driver updated (8/10). Intel says they have a fix, but
"Unfortunately we are unable to provide details of the fixed file(s). We do confirm it has been distribuited, so we recomend you to escalate through Dell*, by requesting engineering, or higher level support technicians to help you. As a computer manufacturer, Dell has their own methods of contacting Intel(R) and resolve your situation. Again, please work this issue through Dell* to ensure all their customers achieve a solution.
Dell only re-releases the intel software. I would think that they would do some certifying of the software, but based on the last release probably not. They obviously didn't pick up on the memory leak. If you are using the intel software currently, I would think the intel version would be worth trying.
