NetGear problems/need wireless solution PLEASE

Dell Inspiron Notebook+NetGear wireless router+Dell desktop computer
We were able to access the internet very well for about 6 months from the laptop but cannot access it now with the laptop unless away from home in a free Wi-Fi location.  When we took the "security" off at home, we could re-establish the connection, however.  The problem seems to be with the security.  Husband reduced the "level" of security, but still no internet access for the laptop unless the security is cut off completely.  Husband won't take security off completely.  What are the other options to get wireless internet for the laptop?  (It is for student use.)  Thanks.

Check wether there is any problem with the router, reset the router and configure it again. if that dosent work, check the wireless connection on a different laptop if possible. if that works.  As u said  it only occurs on ur network. plz reply to me.

    Hi,
Is the wireless network running WPA2? Windows needs a pacth to run WPA2, that can be downloaded of microsoft's web site. If not try posting your laptop and wireless network security settings (minus the passowrds!) here for somebody to comment.
    Have a nice day

It does work when we remove the security.  We have narrowed it down to having something to do with the security.

The laptop is connected wirelessly to the router, and all works fine when the security is turned off.
Yes, when I say "security" I mean Norton or McAfee (I can't remember which we have right now).
We have high speed cable internet access, and that runs through the router to the desktop, and that works fine.

There are any number of factors that could be causing this problem. Is the laptop connected to the router by ethernet cable or wirelessly? Do you have any third party software firewalls enabled on the laptop?(Norton Internet Security, McAfee Security Suite, Zone Alarm, Trend Micro, etc.) These need to be configured to allow internet access and network file sharing. I'm assuming that your experiencing no connection issues with the desktop, correct?

Is the firewall software installed from the Dell factory? Or is it a retail version that you paid for separately?

Must be "retail" because we have had the desktop for several years, and my husband updates the security all the time.

Most paid security software subscriptions are good only for 1 year. Check to see if your subscription needs to be updated?
