One more wireless problem.

I set up a new wireless network at my house last fall. I have a Netgear 54 Mbps router that was brand new at the time. I bought it from Dell at the same time I purchased a new Optiplex system. I also have a Compaq laptop with Centrino technology. My laptop has picked up the wirelss connection fine until recently. Suddenly the connection is often very low. Any thoughts on what the problem could be?

could be a lot of things. is this your only wireless client or do you have others that are still working fine?

you might check and make sure the antennas as still properly connected to the internal wireless card.

Meaning is there some other device I use on the network? I have my Optiplex on the network. And, just yesterday I added an HP wireless All In One Officejet. However, this problem with the laptop was occurring before that. If I'm sitting right next to the router with the laptop it's not a problem.

you might check and make sure the antennas as still properly connected to the internal wireless card.

    How do I do this?

it depends on the laptop and card.  usually you open up a 'door' on the bottom of the notebook by removing a screw.  you will see what looks like a removable circuit board hopefully with two antenna wires going to it.  just make sure these antenna leads are securely connected to the card (usually they push onto the card).

some laptops also have removable ram chips and modems (among other things) under doors like this.  the antenna wires will be a giveaway though.
