Please help NIC up and left?
I have a 2002 Inspiron 8200 running Windows XP home edition. Just recently after a chkdsk the system replaced 4 corrupted strings and now my onboard NIC has gone missing. I contacted dell tech and asked them what kind of card was installed and was told a 3Com 3c905c by one agent and another one said it was a 3c920 which shows up on my drivers CD. I have tried reinstalling the drivers from the cd and restarting but that has failed. After talking to another agent I was told that I installed the operating system wrong from a self install program. So I decided to reinstall windows xp and am right back where I began. I need to get my network card back up and running again ASAP I use my laptop to run my business.
Any help will be highly appreciated!
- The network adapter is not properly installed. It will not work until it shows up in Device Manager as properly installed. You have apparenlty done something that is preventing the network card from being properly installed. Have your tried using System Restore to go back to before you deleted the "corrupted strings".Steve
Under network connections the only thing I see for the adapter is the 1394 Adapter and I know thats used for Firewire connections.
Also it does not show up in network connections just the 1394 connection.
In the device manager I see Other devices and listed below that is "Ethernet controller" with a yellow question mark.
I have also tried ipconfig /all to pull up any information and all I get in return is "Windows Ip Configuration" and nothing more.
I have pinged the card successfully with 4 replies and no loss so I'm just simple stumped.
- System restore was the next thing I tried and that didn't work as well. I finally formatted the HDD with a clean install and installed the chipset first then installed the supplied drivers and still nothing. Also I didn't delete those strings after windows ran a chkdsk it replaced the strings on it's own after finding them corrupted.
Do you get any error messages when you run the driver installation file. Did you follow the installation directions on the Dell download site?
Steve- This sounds like either the network card has gone bad or the chipset drivers were not installed prior to attempting to install the network drivers. Are there any other devices showing up in Device Manager as problem devices? Are you sure you installed the chipset drivers?Steve
