I have a home network with 2 Dell desktops connected via ethernet to a wireless Linksys router WRT54G. The ethernet connections have been working great. I just bought a Compaq Presario 2500 notebook with a wireless G card installed but I keep getting a wireless connection unavailable. I can connect the notebook to the router via ethernet with no problem.
The PC that I used to set up the router settings is a Dell XPS T600, Win 98se. The Compaq has Win XP.
I called Linksys and they walked me through the setup and then said I should call Compaq. I called Compaq tech support and was on the phone for over an hour and they couldn't figure out the problem either. Anybody out there have any ideas?
I want to the link and downloaded the XP update. The SSIDs are now the same and I think the encryptions are the same. The card in the notebook is too old to be updated to WPA so Im using WEP.
Now my Wireless Connection has strong signal strength but I still can't connect to the Internet. What now?
I've got the exact same problem with my dlink 514 and my inspiron 8200. I connect fine through the ethernet cable, and the wireless says I'm connected, only the Dell doesn't receive any packets through wireless. It's sending, and the web admin screen for the dlink is receiving those. It's sending about 10 times the number of packets too, only the Dell receives nothing. I've tried just about everything, including turning off all security, disabling WEP, leaving it totally open. In every case, I can connect fine, it sends from the Dell fine. It receives nothing.
Now, I know the wireless card does work though, since I was using an Airport at my old address. It was working with that perfectly.
BBerman You didn't mention what card you are using but I have this note I kept
Dlink Re: 514 and Wireless access - need help
Login to the router and click on the Advanced tab. Select Performance from the left column and then change the Preamble Type from Short to Long. Some wireless adapters do not support a Short Preamble type and therefore will not see the router when it is configured as such.
I got that off the DSLreports forum a D-link rep. posted it. I guess most cards don't like that router but this will makes them compatible. I don't use them but I thought that was interesting and kept it in case I ran into that router. I got it off the Linksys forum of all places.
My 17 year old son figured out my problem - he reset the IP address on the notebook and now it works fine. Before that, I was on the phone with HP tech support for almost 2 hours and they couldnt figure it out.
First, he took the wireless network connection off of the network bridge. If the network connection is not on the bridge, then you skip that step. Then right click on the wireless network connection and then hit Repair. That will reset the IP address. Good luck.

Do you have the correct SSID name (linksys does not equal LINKSYS) and do you have the same encrytpion enforced on the router and card?
