Wireless & Safety

I just recently switched over to wireless, and I would like to know what additional things I should do to keep my computer safe from outsiders. I have an Inspiron 1150 and I'm connected through cable.

Oh yeah, I do have mcaffe and adaware. I run both on a regular basis. I also have the mcafee firewall

Make sure to apply security and encryption. Preferably WPA2 & AES if your router supports it if not then WPA-PSK & TKIP. Also a strong password.

Thanks, I set everything up as instructed by my manual, and after the modem restarted my computer still found the wireless connection, & it says security-enabled wireless connection but now I get an error message stating
windows is unable to connect to the selected network, please refresh the list of available networks and try to connect again.

I dont get it because windows also says I have an excellent strength connection to the network :/

Did you enter the correct encryption key on your computer?  It has to be identical to the one you entered when you set up encryption on your router.

Believing does not cut it with computers.  You have to be absolutely sure!

Well ya know I put in the code, and it let me click next without giving me a message or anything so yeah....it should be right.

Is awfully difficult to know what the problem is without knowing every step you took in setting this up.  Did you hid the SSID of your router?  If so, unhide it.  ARe you using Windows to manage your wireless connection or the utility that came with the network adapter?
