optiplix 7090 cpu above 90
I have Optiplex 7090 MT with i7-1700 and I found while gaming that CPU gets to above 90C while fan not speeding enough, so I did the following:
- tested both fans from BIOS and both seem ok. they can run much higher than what I see in windows.
- I updated BIOS to latest version.
- I updated all firmware drivers including intel ME.
- tested with prime95 (used task manager's set affinity to test single core).
the result was as follows:
- stressing all cores together. CPU won't reach 90C because of TDP 65W.
- stressing a single core can get CPU to above 90C easily without the fans running high enough.
- fan only (significantly) speeds after running 95C for a few seconds.
- enabling "override fan control" in BIOS will always run case fan at full speed. But it's too loud, will stress the fan much more than needed.
N.B. These tests in room temp ~25C. PC is less than a month old. case air flow unrestricted.
So, is this ok? why don't Dell add profiles for fan speed (eg. quite, medium & aggressive).
How can I prevent these temps and prevent CPU throttling due to High temps? specially with Summer coming
I tried both SpeedFan and HWiNFO64. But, they don't show any fans. The thing is the PC came with Ubuntu and then I installed windows. In ubuntu I remember the fan speed would change more. But it's not just linux that changed BIOS got upgraded too (actually I didn't install a fresh windows I just grabbed an ssd with windows pre-installed from another machine).
Is there a way to get a recovery image of the preinstalled ubuntu to test?

Not Dell endorsed, but SpeedFan and/or HWiNFO64 are a couple of them that I heard of.
Though the 7090 is a new machine, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention to double-check the thermal paste.
"i7-1700" looks like a typo.
