PowerEdge 6950 Memory Config

Good Evening -

Maybe someone has seen this problem I am having with the listed server - PE 6950

I am trying the get the system to read 32GB of ram, the config I have is four CPU's, so 1X8GB stick in each back for each CPU.

I have updated to BIOS to latest <2008>

Checked Server Manager which is reporting 32GB of memory present with no faulty dimms, or dimm banks. however the server will refuse to see any memory over 24GB. The specs on the dell web site states thats an 8GB memory stick will not work in this system, but then a statement stating server update, said it would accept 8GB memory sticks.

http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/555/Product/poweredge-6950

Maybe someone will have an idea??

Best

Gerry

    Hello Gerry

I'm surprised that the operating system is detecting 24GB of memory. 1 DIMM in each bank is not a valid configuration. The DIMMs are supposed to be installed in pairs, so a minimal configuration with 4 CPUs would be 8 DIMMs. The server is designed to work with a single DIMM in a diagnostic configuration for troubleshooting purposes.

My suggestion would be to install the DIMMs in pairs. You can verify that it is a configuration issue by populating 2 DIMMs in the first 2 CPUs and not populating CPUs 3 and 4. If the system detects all 32GB then you need to get 4 more DIMMs for the other 2 CPUs. If it does not detect them then there may be a problem with a DIMM.

    Thanks
