TPM cannot be used on this platform. TPM is turned off. System will reset... Error code:1
I purchased a 'new' Gen 14 TPM 1.2 module (P/N 0CMD3M) for a T140 and I am getting this error when I enable it in the system setup.
It is recognised in the system setup, but any attempt to activate it fails on boot with this message: TPM cannot be used on this platform. TPM is turned off. System will reset... Error code:1
The T140 shipped with a TPM 2.0 module (P/N 01MW70) which is working, but I need to do some TPM 1.2 to 2.0 upgrade testing; so I purchased the 1.2 module from an eBay seller.
I am fairly sure the T140 supports the 1.2 module, so I fear this one is actually a pull/refurb and is not new.
I have see this in the service manual "Once the TPM plug-in module is installed, it is cryptographically bound to that specific system board. Any attempt to remove an installed TPM plug-in module breaks the cryptographic binding, the removed TPM cannot be reinstalled or installed on another system board.". I assume this IS true and not some hyperbole on Dell Engineering's part, as my power googling has come up empty :-(
Can any one confirm the actual "Error code:1" meaning please?

I have unmarked your reply as the accepted answer, as it tells me nothing I didn't know before I posted.
"I'm just going to say so fiddling with TPM is a bad idea because"... Fiddling or tinkering is the best way to learn.
Are you able to ask a PowerEdge SE for the actual meaning of "Error code:1"? I would be grateful.

we don't have any official public document that explain error code 1. I agree with you that issue may come from the refubished TPM module you bought.

Critical Information
Once the TPM module is enabled on any Dell PowerEdge 13G server (or later), that physical chip is now permanently tied to that specific server and cannot be moved to any other system. This physical and cryptographic binding ensures that the platform integrity cannot be breached or that the data cannot be moved to another platform with the TPM.
