Which driver for Emulex?

We are using esxi 7 update 2 (Dell Servers) with Dell vmax product. Sometimes virtual machines vmdk started to have corruption problem. I searched and found a KB.

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000191989/dta-powermax-vmax-afa-vmax-3?lang=en

It says that vmax os version and emulex driver need to be updated (12.8.542.25 or later). When I look through vmware compability, the latest driver for dell branded emulex cards is 12.8.511.0. When I check on Broadcom site, there are more up-to-date drivers for esxi 7. But which one should I choose to solve the problem?

    Hello ssadikoglu,

Thank you for choosing Dell. Could you please share models of Emulex cards and servers, where they were installed? This information would help me in research.

Please ask me if you have any questions,

    Hello ssadikoglu,

Thank you for your reply. I've checked knowledge base article 000191989, you have shared previously. In regards to this article, affected OS are only ESXi 6.5 or ESXi 6.7 Hosts and you informed that you are using ESXi 7.0. U2.

I also checked Dell Support site, because here you can always find drivers validated by Dell. I found this documentation:

https://dell.to/342YlED (that's for Emulex LightPulse LPe31000-M6-D 1-Port 16Gb Fibre Channel Adapter). Regarding documentation (you can download it), the latest update, which is compatible with Dell systems is v. 12.8.511.0

But question with corruption problem could be more complex. How long ago the issue appeared? Was this a problem on previous versions of ESXi?

Please ask me if you have any questions,

    Hello Maria,

This problem started to occur after the esx 7 update. We did not have such a problem when using 6.5. It does not always happen. We opened a case on the vmware and dell side about the problem. They examined it and said that there is no problem on the vmware or san switch side.
They told us that the problem might be in the storage layer.
I thought it might be because I couldn't find any information other than the link I sent you. The explanations in the link were the closest to our problem. I thought that the esx 7 version might be included in the explanation. Can't we use the newer drivers that the manufacturer has released for hba? Because vmware compatibility list is updating late.

    Hi @ssadikoglu,

My suggestion is to keep in touch with the support that you have open the ticket with. It would be best to contact the VMAX storage support to find out if it's a driver issue before installing the new update. It may result to a more complex issue after the update.

In discussion of the driver version, usually I would refer to the VMWare HCL for driver updates. Therefore, the link you provide is the most latest driver for ESXi 7.0 U2. The article that you first shared was for ESXi 6.5 and 6.7. The version may various from hardware and OS versions, so there might be some confusion.

Keep the links saved and contact the storage support for further suggestion, that would be the best course of action.

Then I'm confused, because your link takes you to 12.8.511.0, but the link I sent and specifically the version I point out is for 12.8.542.25, which is what you stated above: "It says that vmax os version and emulex driver need to be updated (12.8.542.25 or later)."
You dont want the 12.8.542.25 version?

    Hi @Reybeast2

yes that's right. that's why I wanted to ask. The manufacturer (emulex broadcom) is for esxi 7 with newer versions released. But it's the same model but for dell branded hba 12.8.511.0 (vmware site). We use this version, because custom dell iso for esxi 7 include this version. On the dell site it says to use 12.8.542.25 or higher. There is a contradiction in this matter. Please clarify this issue.
