Go to SolutionPoweredge R710 - failed HDD
I have a RAID 5 array (virtual disk) which consists of 4 seperate HDDs. One of them has failed (orange light continuously flashing), so I have purchased a new HDD, and placed it into the slot expecteing it to rebuild automatically.... - but after sometime, there is no flashing lights at all, - it seems completely dead.
I have installed Open Manage Server Administrator, on the Storage Dashboard, it shows the status of "Virtual Disk 1" as "Degraded".
If I then click into the "Virtual Disk 1" Properties, it only presents me with three disks, which all have a green-tick status.
Can anyone advise me on how to add the fourth disk?

Thanks for the info.
There are no disks showing as foreign.
It is showing me:
3 physical disks in Connector 0 (status online)
2 physical disks in Connector 1 (status online)
In Connector 1, it is showing me 2 virtual disks.
Virtual Disk 0 is Ready
Virtual Disk 1 is degraded
If I try to execute any tasks via the "Virtual Disk 1 degraded", it tells me that there are currently no disks that are available.
It is reporting that the "firmware/driver information for Controller PERC 6i Integrated" is out of date, not sure if this is something that is having a knock on effect.

If the disk is showing Foreign on the Physical Disks screen (OMSA, Storage, PERC, Backplane/Connector, Physical Disks), you need to first CLEAR the foreign configuration:
OMSA, Storage, PERC, Information/Configuration, Foreign/Clear from the dropdown menu of Available Tasks for the controller.
Once that is cleared, you can add the disk as a hot-spare to start the rebuild, either on the Physical Disks screen (Global) or the Virtual Disks screen (Dedicated).

If your disk is not showing on the Physical Disks screen (either as Foreign or Ready), then your disk is 1) bad, 2) incompatible, or 3) incorrectly installed.
You will only be able to assign it as a hot-spare if the disk is showing on the Physical Disks screen AND it is showing a READY status.

I suspect you are not inserting them correctly then. OPEN the handle of the drive tray, insert the disk in as far as it will go, then use the handle to HOOK the chassis and seat the drive all the way into the slot.

Ok, this is now resolved. Quite embarrassing actually. I screwed the HDD back into the chassis in the incorrect slot... there are screw holes marked SATA and SAS, I put it in the SATA slots (it's a SAS disk), so the HDD was slightly too far away to make a connection! Doh!!
