MD3420 and shared virtual disk with two hosts

Hi all,

I have a PowerVault MD3420 and a couple of PE R430 equipped with a HBA Sas external controller each.
I have created a a diskgroup and an hostgroup with my two servers, which are connected using multipath.

I'm able to see the virtual disk from both the servers. I've created an ext4 partition on the virtual disk and I can successfully see it from the serves.

Here comes the issue: I can't manage the access from both the server. When I mount the partition, this is the behavior:

- from server #1, I can write a file
- server #2 is unable to see the new file
- to see the new file from server #2, I need to unmount and mount again the partition
- if i umount/mount the partition on th server #2, server #1 will be unable to see or write new modifications

Is there something wrong with my setup? Do I need to change the fs type?

TIA for you help and hints

    Hello frednix,

In order to have 2 hosts use the same virtual disk the hosts need to be part of a cluster. Without a cluster the MD doesn’t allow the 2 host to access the same virtual disk at the same time.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Sam, thank you for your reply.

I'm missing the "cluster" part. At the moment, I've configured an hostgroup with my 2 hosts. This hostgroup has a LUN assigned.

How do I create a cluster? I've search for it in the Administration Guide, but I was unable to find any suitable information.

    Thank you for your help

    Hello frednix,

What I mean is that in order for 2 different host to access the same virtual disk you need to have a file locking mechanism in place to prevent corruption. Without having a cluster or some software in that can prevent that then your data will be corrupted. The MD doesn’t have that ability to do file lock so it relies on the OS or the some other software to do that.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
