V305W printer kills Internet/DNS

Home network is:

D-Link DSL-G604T ADSL modem/router

Dimension desktop PC (XP SP3) - connected via ethernet to D-link

Studio17 laptop (Vista Home Prem) - connected wirelessly

Dell V305W printer - USB to Dimension and wireless from laptop.

Latest printer firmware and drivers are in use and OS service packs and patches all installed.

Printing from desktop via USB is working fine, but whenever a print job is sent from the laptop wirelessly to the printer the print is successful but then all internet traffic from both laptop and PC fail.  The only way to get things working again is to reboot laptop/PC and power cycle the router.

I believe the issue is caused by the printer blocking all DNS traffic to external hosts, we can ping external IP addresses but NSLookup fails to resolve.

    jwruk,

The Dell V305w Printer is a wireless printer. Why don't you just have it sit alone as a wireless printer?

Your DLink modem/router is wireless. Use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings in your wireless router, I use channel 11.

Setup your printer using the instructions located at...

    V305 & V305w All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

When you go to setup the printer to the Dimension Desktop, download the XP Drivers, choose network and then follow the instructions. The desktop can send a print job from it to the wireless printer using the wireless network with no problems.

I think you've missed the issue that I'm having.

The printer is connected via USB to the Dimension desktop - this PC can print to the printer.

The Studio laptop has the printed configured as a wireless print device - this laptop can print to the printer but then immediately after the print job has finished all DNS traffic from the local LAN fails.

The V305W is causing all DNS traffic to stop - I can ping external IP addresses but I cannot ping hostnames/domain names.

To make matters worse, last night I turned the printer on and as soon as it powered up both the PC and the laptop were unable to surf the internet and both had to be rebooted along with the router.

    jwruk,

Since you're using the printer with a USB Cable, it looks like your wireless card might be still on causing the problem. Go to the SETUP PAGE and make sure to disable the wireless card.

Thanks, but that defeats the object of having a printer with wireless capabilites.

Seeing as all internet connectivity dies when the printer is turned on then I'll bin this printer and purchase a decent brand one.

    jwruk,

    You said...

The printer is connected via USB to the Dimension desktop - this PC can print to the printer.

You cannot use both. You have to use one or the other.

So you're telling me that I can either have both clients print via wireless or only have one connected via USB?

Dell printer in the bin then and the user will go and get a normal decent printer and a wireless print server.

    jwruk,

You cannot have the desktop connected with the USB Cable. Disconnect the USB Cable from the desktop. Set the printer up for wireless printing.

Uninstall the printer from the desktop and restart your computer.

Now install the proper drivers, choose network and then follow the instructions. The desktop can send a print job to the wireless printer using your wireless network.

    An update:

Dell tech support shipped a new printer out, I uninstalled and then reinstalled the latest drivers and seyup both laptop and PC to print using wireless connectivity.

Printing works fine wirelessly, but as soon as you print the DNS is getting screwed and requires a reboot of everything (PC/laptop/router).  Once everything comes back up and working normally, all that's needed to kill everything is to turn the printer and then everything dies.  Nice!

So, back to my previous comment in an earlier post - time to purchase a non-Dell print and ask Dell for a refund.  Leason learnt by my Parents, don't purchase anything IT related without consulting!

FYI - you can print using a USB connected WinX client AND wireless connected clients.

It appears that the Dell wireless printing functionality requires a uPNP enabled router when using more than one client.

Having got it all working, had I realised that it's a rebadged Lexmark then it would have been in the trash a long time ago.

jwruk -  I have been struggling for a week to install on my DELL Dimension 3000 Win XP my  new All-in-one Canon Pixma MP560. Following all advice, including the Canon Helpline, it still fails to install, let alone Print.  I have a (non wireless) Dell connected to router on a network (of 1 ) cable, with printer attached by USB cable. Also a netbook connected by wireless to the router.

I have just tried installing the Canon on another Win XP Dell 3100 desktop, and again installation failed.

Canon think it is a faulty printer, but I think it is a Dell software/chip problem. Until now my separate scanner, and my HP Printer  have worked fine.

    So beware!
