Go to SolutionEMC R515 RAID 5 not rebuilding
-EMC R515 : updated BIOS,iDRAC,PERC card.
Server has 1 RAID1 array and 1 RAID5.
In the RAID5 array one disk is defective. I replaced it with a similar refurbihed disk I bought online. The array does not rebuild.
I notice a difference between the existing disks and the new refurbished one.
-The size is different (smaller then the original disk). A restore might not be possible because of this.
- The model is , although on the disk itself the model is ST33000650SS printed, different then the other running disks.
- The disk is not certified
-the vendor is SEAGATE, and not DELL
(sector,speed,.. are OK)
I tried to clear the disk. And I think of the above, making it a hotspare fails. (Read somewhere this can start the rebuild.)
I looks like it is not correctly recognized.

If the H700 is up to date it doesn’t block 3rd party drives. It is possible the drive is bad.

Hi,
If the drive size is smaller it isn’t going to rebuild. You probably should return that drive and get another.

But it should be possible to create a new RAID array using this disk?

Hi,
Maybe I'm missing something. I deleted the degraded RAID 5 array, and tried to create a new one with a refurbished disk. Unfortunateley, is is not working. The refurbished disk is a SEAGATE Constellation ES.2.
The refurbished disk always come's in a failed state, or dissapears from the list of physical disks.

Try the drive in a different slot.

Hi Josh,
I tried that. One becomes "foreign" (the certified) , and the refurbished one "becomes" failed".
When I insert it at any given slot, 2 led's are continuously green. When I tried to take into a RAID array , the disk becomes "failed" and then an orange led goes on. I tried it with another refurbished disk. Same result. I cannot build an array.
We bought a new server, but I wanted to keep this one for testing/backup.
The H700 PERC firmware is up to date. BIOS, LCC also. Maybe H700 cannot accept non DELL certified disks. Exact same disk, but Seagate firmware.

I'm giving up on this.I will create a new smaller array, as this will be temporary backup and testbox.

Yes, it will just be slightly smaller than the current one.
