Ok, I'm trying to upgrade the HD in my 4700, right now it's only 40GB and I so need more space. I'm looking at doing an external drive instead of internal. I can get the internal card and external case for a decent price, the problem is, I'm so unsure when it comes to Hard Drives. I know external drives can cost a fortune and I've seen other folks who turn the internal drive into an external one. Anyone got any advice for me? I'm trying to go with USB 2.0 only because I have no clue what else to use. I'm looking for 80-160GB drive. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
You can buy a pre-built drive, or you can build one by buying a USB2 case and power supply and an internal hard drive.
It's often cheaper to put one together, and you generally get a better warranty on the drive itself (most internal drives come with at least a 3-year warranty, while most external drives are warranted for only 1 year).
You will find dozens of external cases at newegg.com - choose the one you want, and then buy the drive. If you live near a Circuit City, they have a Seagate 160G unit on sale for $40 after rebate this week.
Cool, I think that's really what I didn't know, I know it seems cheaper to build your own, but I have really no clue what I needed. Is there anything else I should be looking for on the HD? Like I've seen some that come with certain recovery and crash repair programs, (which I find a necessity!) Although I know I can back everything up to the external drive anyway. Is there a need for any of the extra stuff? I think I found most of it was on the pre-built external HD's but figure I'd ask.
One other quick question. My internal HD is SATA. Does it matter what the external is? I'm guessing because I'm not putting it into the computer and hooking it up internally that it doesn't matter, but I don't want to purchase all of it and then find out I can't use it!
Thank you guys for all your help, I bought my new Hard Drive yesterday. I was originally going to go with a Seagate HD and then buy the external case through Newegg.com. But yesterday morning when I was looking through the weekly circular for Best Buy they had on sale a WD 160GB external drive on sale for $99. It had all the same specs as the Seagate drive, (well just about). I do find it a bit slower as I'm storing some of my games on it and then I have to boot the games from the external drive, but that was the whole purpose of the drive to begin with, I've backed everything up to the drive as well! Thanks again for you help!
