Cannot access CD/DVD drive from Win Explorer

I've recently burned several data DVDs on my Latitude D820 using the OEM Roxio Creator Plus software.

Tonight, after burning a couple, I tried to access the data on one of them to verify the contents.

I find I cannot access the drive from Windows Explorer.

I can access the contents from a command prompt, but if I try to select the drive in Windows Explorer, I cannot get the highlight to stay on the drive and cannot access the drive.

When I close Roxio Creator Plus I get a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error dialog,

"Runtime Error!
Program: ...ommon Files\Sonic Shared\Sonic Central\Main\Mediahub.exe
R6025
- pure virtual function call
[OK]"

I should add that I cannot access any DVD or CD in the drive now using any GIU.

Device Manager reveals no problems and restarting the machine does not help.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

    gulliver2,

Please run the Optical Drive Test from the Dell Diagnostics.  Press F12 when you see the prompt during boot and choose the diagnostics from the menu.  This will test the hardware, and if the drive fails the test, then it needs to be replaced.

    Hi Rollie;

    Thanks for your response.

On a whim, I went into disk administrator and changed the drive letter from W: to R: - voila, it works. Back to W:, it doesn't work. So for the moment it's back to R:.

Don't understand it. I was pretty sure it wasn't hardware (it almost never is) but awfully strange that I can do everything but view disk contents in a GUI.

Today I used the software to copy CDs, create ISO form CD, burn ISO to CD, copy (from a command line) CD contents to hard disk, very strange.

Thanks for your reply, I'll leave well enough alone for now, and we can both add changing the drive letter into our little bag of tricks.

Still can't figure out what's tying up viewing W: from a GUI, it may come to me some day.

    Cheers, Rob
