CD Burner quit....

Hi. Went to burn an audio CD from music files. Files PLAY just fine on music match and Windows Media. When I went to burn a CD on musicmatch or Windows Media, BOTH players say "No CD/DVD drive detected"..Went to the hardware manager checked for yellow boxes and both drives are fine. CD burner reads data just fine, but will not burn. Tech support is sending a new drive, but I feel this is more a software issue. I think I may have some corrupt files. Any suggestions other than to dump and re-install the whole operating system ? Spent 2 hours on the phone with a Dell Tech last night and did everything from going into the registry and more. Still no cigar. Any help greatly appreciated. System only 2 months old (Samsung CD burner SW252S). Thanks

I would try using the Windows CD burning "Wizard" to see if your drive is working. Open Explorer, right click any file or files and select, "Send to", then "CD-RW drive". Follow the prompts, insert a CD-R and see what happens. CD-Rs are cheap so nothing is lost.

Tried that a number of times. Same old message: "Insert blank disc" No disc detected, over and over again....Retry-then everything freezes..Neat

    Hi Neat,

Dell released a firmware update for the Samsung 252 to address some read / write issues, so the problem may have been the drive, the Tech should have had you try that before sending a drive. However the new drive may correct your problem. I would see how the new drive functions before trying to fix a "software" problem you may not have.

    Best Regards

Thanks anyway. Tech still a no-call, no show. Somehow I'm not surprised....Dumped windows, went to re-install, re-installed, burner now works, however computer will NOT connect to the Net. (Using my old computer).  The system resore discs they give you are in-complete.
