CDROM and DVD not recognized by XP
I have seen many posts on this issue. I am happy to see posts by Dell-Karell and by the many posts by The Predator (and the web site).
Unfortunately I have tried everything noted in all the posts and I still can't get these drives recognized by XP. I have flashed BIOS, reset NVRAM, run antivirus, downloaded and flashed CDROM firmware, uninstalled Roxio 5.1, set several registry settings (autorun, upper and lower filters), upgraded to XP sp1a, and upgraded to DirectX 9.0b, I have also uninstalled the driver for ATA / IDS bus, no avail.
Has anyone actually corrected this problem? I complained on MS Technet, as there are several issues on drive recognition there.
Through a series of canned tests I have finally restored these drives. It took four separate configurations and tests to diagnose the issue(s). Turns out that somehow the secondary IDE controller had been switched off in the BIOS. It took the controlled tests to discover/validate.
Thanks Predator for the tips. Also, can you point me to the article on jumper settings? I can't find that on your web site.
To anyone:
I have a similar problem in which I installed a DVD drive and it was working fine until I went to burn a CD(diff drive) and used CD Creator and now I get an error message when trying to view a movie from that the DVD drive. When I look at the settings it states that it is a CD even thou it is identified as a DVD in the machine. What can I do?

- hi rl0822, I know that Roxio 5.1 has issues as is stated in many forum posts. The first thing I would do is remove that and reboot. Then check the status of your drives nad see if they are correct. Also, I'm sure reviewing the Predator site can give you more FAQ type answers. It helped me on what to check in what order.

The articles you mentioned have helped many Members, true each has been different, what worked for one, did not for another, or the fix back door #2 helped Member A but Member B used door #3 fix. There are one or two things you did not mention, re-seated the cables or tested with a new IDE cable / Master / Slave jumper setting, Restore Set-up Defaults in BIOS, double check in the BIOS that the Secondary channel is enabled etc.. If you have done all this, sorry for repeating the information.
For now, Go to Device Manager, Uninstall both drives, open the case, disconnect both drives, Power & IDE cable. Re-boot, then Clear the NVRAM once more. Shutdown and re-install only one drive, set the jumper to however you wish CS or MS and attach to the "End" connection of the IDE cable on the Secondary Channel, re-boot. Does the drive work? If yes, then the Secondary Channel is working, if not, then it could be the drive or the Secondary Channel. Next test your Second drive as you did the first. From this point you should have a good idea as where to look for the issue, hopefully.
