It just started to turn itself off after about 10 mins or so (on battery or mains charger). You could turn it back on again after but the time it would stay on for gets less and less before it turns off again...
when running the diagnostics tool the dst short test comes up as failed. does this mean the hard drive is broken and i need to buy a new one? or is there a bit more to it, something else damaged as well possiblily?
yes i did get that error code? is that the HDD broken for sure then? just get a new one and it should be ok right? sorry im just not that clued up on this

I got the same error 1000-1046 on my D610 this weekend. I am getting it to boot, so perhaps it's borderline. A list of error codes and their meanings would be nice...

You could try to doa repair with your windows xp cd..
To begin insert your Windows XP Professional (Pro) CD and reboot you computer. A message Press any key to boot from CD.....will appear, press the space bar to continue
Setup will now inspect your computer hardware and configuration.
Setup now prepares your computer for install.
From this menu press enter not R to begin the repair install.
Then you will get the windows XP License agreement, read, and if you agree press "F8" to continue, press "ESC" if you disagree. If you disagree setup will finish.
Now select the operating system you wish to repair if as in most occasions there is only one, the just press "R to continue.
Setup will now make some checks on your system
then it willl prepare files that are needed to be copied
Setup will now initialize your XP configuration.
after this
Setup will need to reboot your computer.
Boot will recognize that the XP CD is in the drive dont press any keys at this point
.Now Windows begin to load. Sometimes windows will be finished the repair
Windows will continue to install
Windows setup will now finish
Now restart windows xp again
Boot will recognize that the XP is in the drive dont touch any keys
Windows will now adjust your resolution, click ok
Windows will now apply changes this might take a while
then you will get the windows xp welcome screen
then your desktop will appear the repair is done Good Luck
