DST Short Test

I have a Dell C640 laptop

It just started to turn itself off after about 10 mins or so (on battery or mains charger).  You could turn it back on again after but the time it would stay on for gets less and less before it turns off again...

when running the diagnostics tool the dst short test comes up as failed. does this mean the hard drive is broken and i need to buy a new one? or is there a bit more to it, something else damaged as well possiblily?

any help appreciated!

I got the same error 1000-1046 on my D610 this weekend. I am getting it to boot, so perhaps it's borderline. A list of error codes and their meanings would be nice...

    Device: Hard Drive
    DST Short Test
    FAIL
    Error Code: 1000-0146
MSG: Unit 0: IDE  Status Failed. Status Byte = 64 Control Code = 1 msg = No additional sense information

    Hi

You   could try   to doa repair with  your windows  xp  cd..
To begin insert your Windows XP Professional (Pro) CD and reboot you computer. A message Press any key to boot from CD.....will appear, press the space bar to continue

Setup will now inspect your computer hardware and configuration.

Setup now prepares your computer for install.

From this menu press enter  not R to begin the repair install.

Then you  will get  the windows XP License agreement, read, and if you agree press "F8" to continue, press "ESC" if you disagree. If you disagree setup will finish.

Now select the operating system you wish to repair if as in most occasions there is only one, the just press "R to continue.

Setup will now make some checks on your system

then it willl prepare files that are needed to be copied

Setup will now initialize your XP configuration.

    after this

Setup will  need to reboot your computer.

Boot will recognize that the XP CD is in the drive  dont press any keys at this point

.Now Windows  begin to load. Sometimes  windows will be finished the repair

    Windows will continue to install

    Windows setup will now finish

    Now restart windows    xp again

Boot will recognize that the XP  is in the drive dont touch any keys

Windows will now adjust your resolution, click ok

Windows will now apply changes this might take a while

then you will get the  windows  xp welcome screen

then your  desktop will appear   the repair  is   done   Good Luck

    Hi Bedcom,

Please check you other message. It would be helpful if you provided the model of your Dell.
