Getting data from hard drive when computer broken

Hi. My mother board needs replacing but I would rather get a new computer. Problem is I want some of the files from my hard drive but my computer no longer works, although there is nothing wrong with the hard drive. Is there any way to retrieve my data? I know there are data recovery companies, but they charge an arm and a leg because their focus seems to be more on hard drives with problems. Thanks!

Mount the drive in an exernal case and attach it to the new system by USB. You can then copy your data.

You need a case similar to this, you should be able to buy an external USB 2.0 case from a local big box store.

Make certain it's a metal enclosure, not plastic.

You don't need to buy an enclosure.

    Just buy your new computer.
Then add your old drive to the new computer as the slave. Make sure it's set as the slave, and that's it.

    That's what I did with my B110.

The jumper settings should be on the hard drive's label.

More details, would help, like the computer model, the HD is being installed in and version of windows.

There should be a jumper on the back of the hard drive next to where the cable connects. Move the jumper to the SLAVE position.
I always set the 2nd drive specifically to SLAVE even though with some
computers they can be set to CABLE SELECT.

How do you set it as slave? The last time a added a second HDD. It was to a new one. Came with instructions on how to set the jumpers etc.
