Can we assume that you are using either Windows 2000 or XP?

You will have to try booting off the Windows 2000 CD, entering the recovery console then try the command fixboot and if that doesn't work fixmbr.

THE ONLY CD'S I HAVE IN MY POSSESSION ARE THE FACTORY CD'S. NAMELY, APPLICATIONS, UTILITIES AS WELL AS RECOVERY, AND NONE OF THEM WORK.

    Under warranty still?

It seems to me there is a Microsoft article if one googles on the Inaccessible etc.

I do not know whether opening the compartment where the hard drive is stored, doing a disconnect and then reseating (re-connecting) the "cables" connection would make a difference.

To get at the data on the drive, I could imagine purchasing something like a USB enclosure so it could be hooked up as an external drive, buying a new drive to put into the notebook PC and with that one doing a complete system "restore" to set up Windows, etc. again

If the original hard drive were to work as an external they you could copy what you need.
