installing LG DVDrw

Hello,

I'm going to install an LG DVD RW on to my Dimension 4600. Should I remove the cd/dvd-rom drive and replace it with the new one or should I replace the CDRW drive with the new DVDRW? If someone could lead me to an edoc that explains the installation process that would be great. I'm a little unsure of how to do it.

Thanks,

    Hi Zemi,

Which drive you decide to keep is simply your choice my friend, however most of the Regulars here would recommend keeping a DVD-ROM over a CD/RW. Use the DVD-ROM for movies, game installs /playing, etc.. and your DVD/RW for burning CD & DVD media.

Here is the User Guide for your install in a
    4600 series

Although not set in stone, go to Device Manager, select one drive, click Uninstall, then select the other drive, click Uninstall, shutdown. Our Regulars tend to recommend placing a DVD/RW in the Top Bay, "End" connection of the IDE cable, any second drive goes in the second bay, "middle" connection on the IDE cable. Dell ships thier systems using the cable Select jumper feature, so set the jumper on the new drive to this as well, maybe labeled CS, CSEL or Cable.

    Best Regards!

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
    difference.

Thanks a billion. I'll give it a go. As far as shutting down the drive and all that, do I do that prior to installing the new drive or after I install it. Thanks.

I think Predator is offline.  Yes, uninstall the drives in the Device Manager
as the last thing you do when you shutdown the system to install the new drive.
