Plextor 716A
Some time ago I thought I saw a thread as to installing Plextor drives. Can't remember nor find.
Anyway, I have an 8400 -- replacing the Philips 8631. I believe the 8400 is cable select so I jumpered the Plextor as cable select. I also have a CDRW drive in the 8400.
When I boot up, I get the message "Drive 5 not found: Parallel ATA, PATA-1 (Pri IDE slave)". The Plextor is also PIO, not DMA and I can't change it. The pc sees the drive, Nero sees the drive but of course, it is slow.
Anyone have any info on installing Plextor drives in the 8400?

- Dell uses the Cable Select feature. That means that when both drives are set
as Cable Select, the drive at the end of the cables is the Master and the drive
in the middle is the Slave.
Jumper both of your drives as Cable Select and place the Plextor at the end of
the cable and lets see what you get. Thank you for getting back to me. I did put the Plexor at the end, booted up, did not get the Post message and then got the "Found New Hardware" for the Plexor. Ran Infotool and showed the Plextor as DMA. Burned an 8X DVD and it was a tad slower than the 8631 but 30 minutes faster than when in PIO mode. Didn't seem to read as fast as the 8631 but now I'm thinking of replacing the cable select ribbon cable with a 80 conductor cable.

I'm adding to my previous post.
I ran the Nero info tool and it was telling me that on the secondary IDE channel (I didn't know the 8400 had one) the CDRW is a master and the Plextor is a slave (although I jumpered the Plextor as cable select). I had assumed the CDRW was also jumpered as cable select since everything I've seen on 8400's stated that the removable media drives and the cable were cable select.
Perhaps I should swap places on the cable with the CDRW and the Plextor, jumper the CDRW as a slave and jumper the Plextor as a master? I haven't checked out the jumper for the CDRW yet but what if it is jumpered as cable select and not master? Does where on the cable make a difference -- that is -- if the CDRW is indeed jumpered as cable select, leave the Plextor as cable select and place the Plextor last on the cable?
