- 7200 rpm drives are faster than 4200 is all cases - depending on the design of the drives, they may or may not be much faster than 5400 rpm drives.
If you do a lot of disc-intensive work, the speed boost will be more significant than for other applications (like word processing or Internet browsing). - Hi,The main difference between 4,200rpm, 5,400rpm and 7,200rpm is the seek speed. The hard disk's platter is a circular piece of magnetic component with sectors which the moving head can read from. However, sometimes the moving head must wait for the platter to rotate to the correct sector before it can read specific data. So if the platter has faster rotation speed like the 7,200rpm the hard disk drive will have lower latency and faster performance. 4,200rpm and 5,400rpm are low end drives but are still present in Dell Inspiron Laptops.
