there's a program called "a-squared free" --- it does NOT include real-time protection.

I have minimal experience with a-squared.   But I believe Joe53 uses it, and recommends it.   Joe??

    This seems confusing.

Freeware! This program contains only the basic scanner. Background Guard, Automatic Updates, Scheduled Scans and HiJackFree are only available with a-squared Anti-Malware.

That means you get an on-demand scanner and you must manually download updates.
Basically, you run it yourself and it is not automatically updating or running in realtime.

    A-squared Free 3.1 is a solid anti-trojan:

Easy to install, configure, update and run. Plays well with all my defenses, and very few false positives. Also a good user support forum. I can't think of any reason not to have it as a backup scanner.

I also can't think of any good reason to purchase the real-time version (unless the free version keeps detecting true trojans, perhaps).
