    You are right...

In trying to logon to my Windows XP account, which is the welcome screen before your icon screen comes on.

When I click on the name designated on my account, instead of getting me into my main screen, it immediately switches over to the same screen, but it says "windows is shutting down", so you cannot get in to any programs whatsoever.

It has been fine for three months until yesterday.

I.m afraid that just saying you have a log on problem is not going to get much response, there could be any number of reasons and therefore any number of potential solutions.

I assume that you mean log on to Windows.

Please post the following, so that someone may offer specific advice:

PC model, Windows version (XP home, XP Pro, W98, WMe?)

    If it is Windows,

Has your PC been working OK, and now a problem has occurred, or is this at your first attempt to log on to a new PC or set up.

If it was working OK before, what were you doing in the session immediately before the problem occurred. Were there any problems or error messages during that session, did Windows close normally at the end of the session...

What are you doing to log on, at what stage of logging on does it fail, and are there any error messages.

Anything else you think is relevant.

PS your second message was posted as I was typing. Nevertheless more details would be helpful.

One possibility is that your profile has got corrupted, or there may be something more fundamental.

It would be useful to know whether you can get in to Windows some other way, e.g.:

Do you have another user account (for which you know the password)? if so, see if it will open in that account.

You could try going in in safe mode, see if that works, either on your account or the Administrator account (for the latter, see

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm  scroll down to Administrator account; for password leave blank, unless you know otherwise)

Or it could be a virus or worm. Are you up to date with Windows critical and security updates and AV virus definition updates?

It would still be useful to know if anything untoward occurred during the session before this happened, and whether Windows shut down normally.

I should perhaps have added that if your profile is damaged, then

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326688&Product=winxp

gives advice on how to fix it.
