malicious scipts or not?

Two somewhat related questions:

I just had an instance where I accessed my XPs "Dell Support" feature, used the search feature and immediately got a McAfee warning that a script trying to run might be malicious. If I intended for it to run, them I should give permission, if not, stop the action. I stopped and McAfee nipped the file (I think).

Question 1: How in the world is a user to know if a script is supposed to run or not? Apparently, not all scripts are malicious so how do we make the determination?

Question 2:  Apparently, one of the new viruses enters through specific unprotected ports. I have the XP firewall enabled--that doesn't keep viruses out?

Thanks!!

Some of your questions can be answered by you, looking at my 'computer safety online' site - link below.

How do you know - malicious scripts - well that is a hard question. The main answer for this would be - if you downloaded a program from that site would you run it without checking it for virus's.

The answer would then be different depending on the site that you are on - if it was a MS or Dell site I would say yes let it run - if it was at a known malware site I would say no, and any other sites somewhere inbetween.
