This may pertain more to spy-ware than viruses, however... Upon running NAV 2004 Professional, it found about 12 files that it classified as spyware. However, it is unable to remove any of the files. I went to add/remove programs, and removed all the suspicious programs, with the exception of "Web Savings from Ebates," which the computer (Windows XP Home) is "unable to find.." Next, I also ran Ad-Aware, which removed all suspicious files it found; yet, NAV still finds 12 suspicious and unremovable files, and windows cannot remove "Web Savings from Ebates." Unfortunately, I did not have system restore on at the time. What should I do? Thanks a lot for your help.
Then, unzip it to a permanent folder say for example c:\Hijackthis .... run hijackthis....hit SCAN....then hit SAVE LOG.... copy and paste the log in your post....
DO NOT FIX OR REMOVE ANYTHING ANYTHING WITH HIJACKTHIS FOR MOST AOF THE ENTRIES ARE USUALLY HARMESS/ESSENTIAL
Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7 Scan saved at 2:06:54 PM, on 6/15/2004 Platform: Windows XP (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 (6.00.2600.0000)
Thanks so much, however.. before I follow through with your insturctions, I'd like to know what I'm deleting/fixing and why. I guess I just want to see what is on my computer that shouldn't be. Thanks again
will removing this one virus eliminate all 12 of the files that norton is unable to remove? Upon runing NAV once again, i found that it catagorizes the spyware it finds as 'adaware.bargainbuddy, or adaware.binnet, or adaware.clickalchemy' I am sure that I have erased every bit of bargain buddy on my computer, and am not sure what the other two signify.
The answer is no. These are different from what you mean .But you have to remove these anyway.
If you disabled anything(STARTUP ENTRIES) through msconfig ,please enable them back . Then post a fresh log.
Also ,. if you have removed those adwares manually, then there ay be orphaned registry entries .
I suggest that you do this ,. this should definitely help .
Click http://www.spybot.us/spybotsd13.exe to download Spybot Search & Destroy - install, update, scan and fix all RED items it finds. Reboot when done.
Click http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ to download Ad-Aware and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then click the gear wheel at the top and check these options:
General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"
Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".
Reboot when done, rescan with HJT and post a new log here .

after running both re-running ad-aware with your new settings, and downloading/running spybot, norton still finds those 12 files, and I am unable to remove "websavings from ebates" from the add/remove programs list. should i go ahead and run hijack this and post the log? (i haven't removed the original files your told me to rid of)
Please remove those files i asked you to remove. If you just want that Uninstall entry to be gone there is a way. But lets keep that step for later.
You say that Norton finds twelve files. Can you give exact details of what files it finds and their locations. It would be much helpful if you can do that.
Alright, i fixed the Q16 - DPF {5633.....} entry, however.. the other files you instructed me to fix were no longer found by HijackThis. Perhaps they were removed by my spybot scan, which found a good number of spyware files or whatnot. I will run norton anti-virus and let you know the 12 files it finds as soon as possible. Sorry about the delay between my posts, I have been very busy in the past week. I appreciate all your time.
