spysheriff warning background, how do i remove

Hi,

Since my previous thread i have succsessfully removed the syware warning balloon but am still plagued with the large red n black 'SPYWARE INFECTION' warning notice that seems to have attached itself to my themed background.

When i try to change my background all the options are locked from selecting, also, when i log onto internet my yahoo home page no longer opens up as my home page.  My homepage is now taken over by a BLUE warning page saying my pc has been infected by some information gathering spyware threat.

Can anyone help with suggestions as to how i can resolve this problem, please note: can you make your suggestions/instructionsas basic as possible as i am not very pc literate.

regards

I was just helping my sister with this same problem tonight and came here to look for help. I'm somewhat computer literate, but couldn't figure out what to do after installing the Anti Spyware software. Someone posted the response below in blue in a prior message titled "background is locked up".

Before reading the response below, do you have an Anti Spyware program on your PC? One of our local news stations said that Ad-Aware can help remove Spyware. Go to http://www.lavasoft.de/ and Download the Ad Aware Personal. After it is installed, and you run the scan, it should remove any spyware files. Running this program on my sister's laptop removed several files, but that ugly background still wouldn't go away and the display options were locked. We then tried the suggestion below, and it got rid of the Spyware background.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi:

Assuming your machine is actually cleared of malware, you probably have just the junk wallpaper remaining. You can clear it from your registry:

Start>Run>regedit: Navigate to the following key- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
    Delete the entry Wallpaper.htm.

As usual, be sure to back up your registry before attempting any edits. Let us know if this works- many others have this problem.

This is my first time on this forum and my first time with a computer virus.

Many thanks for the help. I am a little worried about mucking around in the registry as this could damage things even the one file that i had to delete as recommended. Any tips to stop melt down situation if i delete the wrong wallpapers file.

I was worried that only i was infected with Spysherrif. Looks like it is worldwide.

Happy New Year from the UK

    mrelephant:

If you are unfamiliar with editing the registry, probably the best way to back it up is to create a restore point in System Restore prior to editing. That way, if you make an error, you can always restore the registry to the way it was. Details on this procedure are here:
    http://www.theeldergeek.com/system_restore.htm

Here is a brief tutorial and viewlet from Denny Denham on how to edit the registry: http://www.djdenham.com/Basic_Windows.htm
    (It is the first topic.)
