Spyware problems

I have been having problems with something called "istbar".  I've found instructions on how to remove it, but it comes right back.  It's driving my spyware program nuts and occasionally some very lewd stuff gets through.  I have to completely rebuild my system very soon due to problems with Windows XP-SP2 and I'm trying to make sure this doesn't show up again.  I have run HijackThis and the log follows:

    Kim,

Let's see what we can do...

    threebears,

    Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

    1. Click " Free Online Scan".
    2. Click " Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

    1. Select all available drives.
    2. Check(tick) " Auto Clean".
    3. Click " Scan".

When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

Download the Adware.Istbar removal utility from Symantec and following the instructions on the same page.

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click " Config..."
    2. Click " Misc Tools"
    3. Click " Open Process manager"

    -

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate ( if present) and click on ( highlight) each of the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\nkxxdv.exe
    C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click " Kill process". Now, click " Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    folders...

    C:\Program Files\ISTsvc

    files...

    C:\WINDOWS\nkxxdv.exe

    Post back a new log.

Hi Mike.  After running House Call, I got the following 7 files as status "Non Cleanable":

    TROJ_ISTBAR.GM, Non Cleanable, C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe

    TROJ_ISTBAR.AC, Non Cleanable, C:\WINDOWS\acmnrn.exe

    TROJ_ISTBAR.AM, Non Cleanable, C:\WINDOWS\atcvd.exe

    TROJ_ISTBAR.AM, Non Cleanable, C:\WINDOWS\lufitv.exe

    TROJ_ISTBAR.AC, Non Cleanable, C:\WINDOWS\ncsmpoe.exe

    TROJ_ISTBAR.AC, Non Cleanable, C:\WINDOWS\wulxnn.exe

    TROJ_ISTBAR.AC, Non Cleanable, C:\WINDOWS\xvkfj.exe

I got through everything else on your list.  Interestingly enough, the "istbar removal tool" from Symantec didn't detect this monster on my system!  When I did the Hijack This scan and looked for those line items, I found almost everything.  I clicked "Fix checked" but did not reboot my system.  I found and deleted c:\Program Files\ISTsvc.  File c:\WINDOWS\nkxxdv.exe did not exist.

Here is the new Hijack This log:

    Kim,

Let's see if we can get you the rest of the way...

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DirT] C:\WINDOWS\nkxxdv.exe

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    folders...

        C:\Program Files\ISTsvc

    files...

        C:\WINDOWS\acmnrn.exe
        C:\WINDOWS\atcvd.exe
        C:\WINDOWS\lufitv.exe
        C:\WINDOWS\ncsmpoe.exe
        C:\WINDOWS\wulxnn.exe
        C:\WINDOWS\xvkfj.exe

    -

If your having a problem deleting any of these files, also try deleting them from "Safe Mode"

    Download mwav.exe from MicroWorld, then:

    1.  Double-click the mwav.exe icon to run it ( it'll self extract).
    2.  Click " Scan".
    3.  When it completes, post back the results.

    Post back a new log.

    -

    Mike.

Hi Mike.  Here are the results.

After I did the things you listed from HijackThis (I didn't find c:\Program Files\ISTbar but I did find everything else), I ran mwav.exe.  The log shows this:

File C:\WINDOWS\system32\brix6ie.ocx infected by "not-a-virus:AdWare.Coupons.d" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken.

File C:\WINDOWS\system32\instsrv.exe tagged as not-a-virus:RiskWare.Tool.ServiceRunner.f. No Action Taken.

File C:\WINDOWS\system32\netut80ex.vxd infected by "not-a-virus:AdWare.BargainBuddy.n" Virus. Action Taken: No Action Taken.

File C:\DOCUME~1\KIMBER~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\pftDE~tmp\HelperExes\Setup_enu.exe tagged as not-a-virus:Tool.Win32.Reboot. No Action Taken.

Here is the new log from HijackThis:

    Kim,

Other than just a few cleanup entry(s), your log looks just fine.

    -

    Let's get you finished out...

    Let's delete this file...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\netut80ex.vxd

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

If everything is running ok, let's do some cleanup...

    1.  Run " Disk Cleanup" and allow it to remove everything it finds.

    2.  If you've downloaded MicroWorld AV, run it again - but don't scan, just click " Clear Log" and exit the program.

    3.  Go to www.trendmicro.com and click " Free Online Scan", then " Scan now, it's free!". When it's downloaded, select all available drives, then check(tick) " Auto clean", then click " Scan".

    4.  Run AdAware SE Personal and " perform a full system scan", then Spybot S&D, and " Check for Problems". Let them both remove the residual 'problems' left that HiJackThis couldn't fix.

    5.  Disable, then re-enable system restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system point manually.

If your having any more problems, post back.

    Happy surfing,

    Mike.

    THANK YOU!

    THANK YOU!

    THANK YOU!

So far, everything seems "clean and green" and I am very grateful.  I really appreciate the time you took to get rid of this miserable thing.  I also hope that no one else is afflicted with it, but your help should make a difference to them to.  Thank you so much!
