There are very many security software/scanners that may help you very much.

Trend Micro Online scanner- http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Use the extended select tab and have all boxes checked. If for the port scan you get an error for after a few minutes please start over and uncheck that box.

CWShredder - http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ If you find any on scan use the fix option.

Install and update to latest. Also enable all protection.

Install and update to latest definitions. Immunize and check again under the immunization area. Also check in the protection box on the immunaztion are if it shows near the bottom.

Update and check. Run full system scan and make sure both areas have a check instead of an x.

For an Antivirus I recommend AVG or Avast.

Gmanson mentions a pretty good online scanner for you and recommends the AVG or Avast applications. Also good. They are free too so the price is right and really, for a home user either of those two would be good choices. Depending on your level of experience, if you would consider yourself a novice user then I would recommend AVG. If you feel you are a step above that, then you would do well with Avast.

Just to clarify for you, the CWShredder he mentions is not actually a security package that you would purchase. It's freeware and it scans your system looking only for a specific type of malware infection known as the CoolWebSearch browser hijacker and it's variants.

Spyware Guard and SpywareBlaster aren't scanners at all. They are good pieces of protective software but they won't remove any vermin that has already made it's way to your hard drive. They do however work in the background to help prevent you from unwittingly downloading any malicious active X software if you perchance happen upon one of the wrong web sites. Two good pieces of protective software to have nonetheless.

Now, Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware SE Personal are both excellent pieces of freeware protection applications and I think, a must have for all home users.

I would suggest, home users need these four things:
1) Antivirus scanner
2) AntiSpyware/Adware scanner
3) AntiTrojan scanner
4) Firewall

...so to round out your security, there is one more piece of protective software you should use and it's free too. The Ewido Trojan scanner has recently undergone some changes both in ownership and design. Then name changed too, so for those who aren't familiar, the new AVG AntiSpyware application and the old Ewido are one and the same. You can download AVG AntiSpyware here.

For your free firewall software you can select one of these recommended applications:
