I have read a lot of e-mail on this board about this subject and all the excuses that Dell gives. All I can say is that I have a Dimension 8300 and that these files start appearing recently after installing SP2 and upgraded my McAfee Anti-Virus. I have done all the possible tricks to fix the problem. I did a reinstall repair to Windows XP Home, run a System File Checker in Dos, run AntiVirus twice in Windows and once in DOS. Reinstalled SP from a Microsoft CD. Ran McAfee's Spyware twice and Lavasoft's Ad-Adware SE twice. You name. Sent copies of the text messages to Microsoft which they can't interpret. The only time the problem stopped is when on McAfee's advice I uninstalled QuickClean5 for a day and they stopped. Features of QuickClean will not run without crashing. I have uninstalled all McAfee's products, including the Registry and reinstalled them per instructions from McAfee's Tech Support and the problems persist.
Now the funny thing is this. I have the exact same Operating System and Securtiy Software on my 5 year old Compaq Pentium III and have never had this problem nor gone through all the schrades to make it work. I just installed the programs and everything worked the first time. There is something about the Dell. This is my first and last Dell as their Tech Support compared to Compaq's is a joke. Never again with Dell.
Good luck with that. You really cannot compare a 5 year old system to a new system as the architecture has changed but you do have a point you do have a problem.
Dell doesn't have an answer either. The problem is not that my computer is 5 years old. I realize that things have changed in 5 years, but they should have gotten better, not worse. Dell is only interested in selling computers and then selling help services. You would think that they would be concerned with a complaint that an old Compaq is less trouble free than a new Dell.
I just did a quick search on Google and found numerous references to this problem. The most reoccurring comment was "Appcompat.txt is an error file generated by the compatibility mode of Windows XP when a program crashes unexpectedly." From your posting it sounds like the program "Quick Clean" is doing just that. Try uninstalling Quick Clean for a while to see if the problem goes away. As OneTrickDog point out the architecture between the Compaq and Dell system has changed in five years and it is possible the Quick Clean program doesn't like your Dell. If the problem disappears with the uninstall of Quick Clean, I would then take the issue up with McAfee.
I did that. I deleted QuickClean5 and the appcompat.txt no longer appears so I know that the compatibility issue is with QC5. I have spent countless hours with McAfee chat & e-mail service and they don't have a clue. I followed ever instruction that they gave me and nothing works. I is a shame when vendors produce computers and software that are faulty and then expect you to pay for their mistakes.
