It's better than Win 98/ME and it's called Ntbackup. You have to install it. Here's how: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q302/8/94.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=backup&rnk=6&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=WINXP

Microsoft does not support this Utility. It provides its supported version of Backup on XP Professional. I completely disagree with this approach. Home and Professional users alike have a requiement to backup their files. If this utility really does the job, then Microsoft should do whatever is necessary to make it supportable. What does Dell recommend that its XP Home customers use for Backup? Surely not this unsupported Utility.   Tim Fitz

I have just consulted this thread.   I followed the link to acquire the backup program, the link does not work.  Does anyone have the correct link.

I think the comment about no backup capability existing in XP home edition is completely correct and sensible.  Does anyone know if MS has updated its policy in this regard?

    Thanks, Stuart

    Stuart,

Backup is not officially supported in XP home.  To manually install Backup in Windows XP Home:

Insert the Windows XP Home Edition CD into the CD or DVD drive.
    Click Perform additional tasks.
    Click Browse this CD.
    Click Value Add.
    Click MSFT.
    Click NTBackup.
    Click NT Back installer.
Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation of the backup utility.

The link to the Microsoft article:

    Thank you Mel.

In fact, I did not receive a Windows XP disk, I received a "reinstallation CD" from Dell.  The good news is that it contained the backup software and I was able to install it.  I hope Dell is not planning (like many other vendors) to ship only a startup image of XP with new PC's, as it would then be impossible to perform this or similar functions.

    Thanks, Stuart

After installing WINXP Backup I find the darn thing won't write to CD of any type . Microsoft has Tech. Article saying this , but offers no solution . I'm just a home user who does not have a second hard disc or tape capability -what does Dell recommend I do  ?

Microsoft backup will not directly save to cdr(w), you will need to create the backup onto a 2nd drive or partition then use your burning software to save to cdr(w).  There are plenty of 3rd party backup software available that do have the ability to backup to cdr and span cd's if the backup is larger than the amount of data the cdr will hold.  Try searching google for backup utility software for XP, or maybe some forum members can recommend backup software that may be useful.
