I have an older Inspiron 8500 and my OS became corrupted so I decided to do a complete reinstallation of XP pro. However, the installation only gets to 34 mins remaining and then freezes up and goes to a blue screen with a bunch of giberish on it (Not the standard bsod with error messages). I had an old version of windows 98 laying around so I thought I would give that a try but it wont even get past setting up the insallation menu.
I have tried running the dell diagnostics and chkdsk and both found no hardware or disk errors. Does anyone have any ideas on where to go from here?
Everything is disconnected from the laptop but still cannot get past 34 mins on the install. The last 10 lines on the SETUPAPI are as follows, but I can't make any sense of them:
#I060 Set selected driver. #I058 Selected best compatible driver. #-124 Doing copy-only install of "V1394\NIC1394\2119D061444FC000". #-166 Device install function: DIF_REGISTER_COINSTALLERS. #I056 Coinstallers registered. #-166 Device install function: DIF_INSTALLINTERFACES. #-011 Installing section [nic1394.ndi.Interfaces] from "c:\windows\inf\net1394.inf". #I054 Interfaces installed. #-166 Device install function: DIF_INSTALLDEVICE. #I123 Doing full install of "V1394\NIC1394\2119D061444FC000".

You did disconnect all external devices, except mouse, keyboard and monitor..?
Start by read this. And if that doesn't help, google: XP reinstall 34 minutes
You'll find lots more on this issue.
