I have windows vista home basic. I cant install my antivirus, inportant updates, games, or anything. I deleted all the games and music that was on here cause I thought it might be from not having enough memory but I checked them meme that was left and there was more then enough. I am running on dial up because where I live we cant get anything else. I have a new emachine. 512mb ram. PLease help me asap.
512 MB is not enough for Vista, is the minimun so a computer with 512 will
turn on using that amount of memory. A computer with Vista Homa Basic it is a really basic computer, not for gaming.
Im not trying to use the computer for gaming. IM just trying to install my antivirus and updates. It worked fine for the last year. No problems at all.

You stated you cannot install AV, games... That's why I said it is not for games.
What antivirus do you have, and what antivirus are you trying to install???
As the other person mention, a half gig of ram is bare minimal for a Basic Vista system, sure it ran ok a year ago but you've collected a lot of things on your hard drive since then. If you don't want to add more memory(I highly suggest you add more). You need to do some house cleaning (remove programs not in use, disk cleanup, also download and use
CCleaner. Are you using the auto disk defragger? I don't know why you can't update????? What kind of updates are you talking about???

I had a similar situation happen to me. I had installed VISTA basic on an older Dimension 3000 and had a problem with my AV download.
I was able to download the file and install after doing the following. First, I did a defrag of my HD and then I changed my SECURITY setting in IE7 from Medium-High to Medium and then the download worked.
I have 1 gig of memory but according to the link below MICROSOFT says to run basic 512 mb will work.
Based on my readings I think the 1 gig is better to run VISTA basic. Since I have installed VISTA on my older PC I have had no issues and enjoy many aspects of VISTA.
I would consider what other responders have indicated as their level of expertise is greater than mine. Trust you find be able to download your AV product.
If you want to try one that I know will work I will suggest NOD32 from ESET. 30 day free trial.
I am trying to install McAfee I have the disk and when i put it in the box opens but it is blank so i tryed to gert it off the internet and it downloaded but it wont install it just tellls me it was unable to install. Im not trying to do any games. The vista updates are the ones I cant install. Again it just tells me it was unable to install but it dont tell me why.
When problems occur downloading/installing Windows Updates, there's an error code, that error code can tell us why the reason is.
About the antivirus, do you have a pre-installed (by Dell maybe) antivirus??? Or any trial version you may installed???? If so, uninstall it, and try installing McAfee.
See that is my problem it is not giving me an error code it just dont come up or open.I have no other anti virus on the computer no free ones no preveiously installed ones nothing. I do have adware on it but that is. it
I just got thru doing a clean install on a Dell Dimension 1100/B110 with using a Dell Reinstalation DVD XP Professional and went to the Dell website to get the drivers, but now when I try to get the windows updates I get a error code:0X80072F8F. I was able to download SP 2, but after SP 3 is finished installing, after I reboot and check for SP3 but its not on the pc...
