Dimension 8300 system restore

Is it possible to restore my system to factory settings without the CDs that came with the computer? If so, how would I go about this? I've tried the "Ctrl+F11" stuff but apparently that only works with systems built in 2004 or after.

    egyles,

No, for older systems you have to reinstall everything manually and this will require the Windows XP CD and any application CDs. Drivers can be downloaded.

can you make a restore disk? i know compaq have the abbility to make a restore disk so you don't need the xp disk ,

second if you use windows backup to do a complete copy of your hard drive do you still need the xp disk? just wondering,

No, without the XP reinstall CD you cannot install windows.  Applications and drivers can be downloaded from Dell's website.

    klbf,

Dells have never had the capability of creating a Restore CD. Rather, Dell provides a copy of the operating system. Newer systems have both a restore partition on the hard drive which can return the system to its "as shipped" state and also a facility which can be used to create an XP Reinstallation CD, since those CDs are no longer routinely shipped with new Dell systems.

Dell does not have the ability to make a restore CD, same as Compaq. You could make a mirror image of your hard drive to a second hard drive, using one of these utilites.

Or, use the free cloning utility supplied by the drive manufacturer.  Of cause, you could buy a new retail copy of XP
