Dimension 8400 and SP2 ?
I just placed an order for the Dimension 8400 and I've been reading the posts about the Pentium 4 Processor and the possible motherboard problem.
The only information I have is it has a Pentium 4 530 (3.0 GB) with a 925 Express Chipset.
Does anyone know if this model is compatible with SP2?
I asked the sales person to check with tech support about this and he said all Dell's are compatible. I didn't get that impression here.
I see that you can download a tool from Intel to find out this information, but I didn't understand the instructions at the point of opening the dos screen.
I'm getting concerned about this purchase.

I don't see why we need to concern about what pentium and chipset to be able to run XP2.
All XP base computer should and will run SP2 with no problem. There's nothing to worry...
SP2 will only get conflic with some programs/software that you might have installed previously. So, all you need to do is uninstall those programs and you'll be fine.
Please scan your system first with updated anti-virus, spyware scanner and ad-aware scanner before you get SP2 install. You need a clean PC before getting SP2 to run happily in your system...

I was reading the FAQs above and came across this link, which indicates there can be problems:

Sincerely, Libra1 I don't want to perpetuate the "SP2 Scare Stories" - the SP2 upgrades I have carried out have all gone well. However, I would not attempt any upgrade of this magnitude without performing a complete system backup first - I don't think you can rely on Restore or the SP2 uninstall to reverse the installation if things do go wrong.
Me Myself's advice on antivirus & spyware is good but you should also insure that you disconnect all unnecessary devices from your system - printers, scanners, USB drives and what-have-you. Also, you are unlikely to be able to tell what software may cause problems, as the software won't necessarily be straight-forward programs - and there may be a remote chance that you have drivers on your system which will give SP2 a headache.
The bottom line is that everybody is going to have to install SP2 eventually if they want a secure system - just insure you have a full backup before you do.

Thank you for your reply. I found out that my version of 8400 comes with a new feature with an image file of the out-of-the box install, so if I experienced any problems I think I could resort to that. I have been told that 8400 has the latest cpu and there shouldn't be any problems.

Thank you. I'm hoping it all works out well. If not I have the option of returning the computer within 21 days of the shipping date (shipping expenses mine). But I'd be very disappointed if it came to that.
I really wouldn't have anything to back up on the computer and since it wouldn't have been used, I don't think there would be a malware problem. I don't know how to back things up at this point. I've never used XP so this will all be new to me.
