EXTERNAL RAM DRIVE NOT RECOGNIZED

I recently installed an external RAM Drive (HP dvd840, Lightscribe).  When I install the accompaning software, plug into the USB Port, it works fine....but after I shut down the computer and then restart it...this drive "disappears" and I have to reinstall the software again.  What can I do to make this external drive stay active?   HELP!!!!!!

Thanks,

I want to expand on my earlier posting.   When I turn off my computer and then restart it...the "J" drive (external HP dvd840 lightscribe) is gone....i.e. it is not recognized by the computer.  However, if I unpllug the drive ....it "resets" and is recognized.
Does anyone know why this happens and what can I do to have this drive permanently recognized.
Also.....can I damage the drive....or the computer if I continuously unplug the device which is connected to a USB port.

    Thanks,,,,,

During those times it is not recognized, check the Disk management applet to see if it is there?  You may need a BIOS upgrade to read this new type of device, accurately.

Thaks for your quick response to my problem.
I checked in the Device Manager and it was not listed.  Is this the same as  the "Disk Management applet"?
How do I upgrade my BIOS.   Please be specific...I'm not a computer expert...(I know more that the "average bear"....but just enough get into trouble).

    Thanks,
