Freeze up

Ds's new 3000 freezes up on startup.  All the desktop icons do not come up.  When attempting to run any program, nothing happens.  When he attempted a restore, it does not run at all.  HELP!

This is  a new system only 2 weeks old.  It is running  Norton Antivirus.  It was running fine last night and this morning when ds went to log on, nothing.  Try to do a sys restore and nothing happens.  Cant connect to the internet, tried booting in safe mode.....nada, zip no go.  It comes up to the desktop yet nothing runs.

He attempted to call support, but got tired of waiting over 10 mins.  Its XP home but we would like to upgrade to Professional (like my Dell 8250) .

What kind of restore? A win xp system restore or the Dell PC restore by Symantec?

If its the latter and the pc is still freezing up. You should probably format and reinstall the OS. Just to see if you are having a hardware issue.

Did you create the OS recovery CD?

Have you tried booting to safemode?

Is this an out-of-the-box Dell DIM 3000 or have you connected it to the internet and done some surfing?

    Lemme know.

    cheers,

    LNC,

First off I would probably try using the Dell PC restore.

Hold down the (left control key and hit F11) before the Dell Screen comes up on boot. It will ask you if you wanna restore, click restore and then confirm.

If you complete an upgrade to xp pro you will modify the Mater boot record(MBR) and will loose your Dell PC restore ability. You will no longe be able to easily restore your system to the factory shipped OS and drivers and programs.

Getting the Dell PC restore back is a duanting task and unless you know parition magic and your way into recovery console I would just "stick" with XP home.

Thanks so much.  That worked.  Will have ds create a restore disk ASAP.

As for the XP professional, it is required for use on the college network.  I've attached the link explaining the requirements.  I did not have the option to upgrade the OS to Professional when I bought it.  What would be the best way to do this.

    Thanks

Microsoft recommends the best way to upgrade your system is simply insert the OS CD and click install. It will give you options to upgrade.

    Best of Luck.
