IE6

I was told by a rep at Microsoft that IE6 automatically comes with Windows XP. However, when I try to open certain files on web pages I get a message stating they cannot be opened unless I have IE 5.5 or greater. Does anyone have any idea why I can't open the GIS(Geographical Maps) file?

If you are talking about this site:  http://www.gis.com/

I am running Windows Xp Pro, and IE 6.0, and it opens with no problem.  Since IE 6.0 does come with Windows Xp, you can check your version by clicking on Help, then About Internet Explorer. I would suggest you check at Windows Updates, to make sure all critical updates are installed, and post the exact wording of the error, perhaps someone can help.  Good Luck. http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Make sure you update and scan for viruses, and update and run whatever tool you use to detect and remove trojans/spyware.

    witz,

The URL you listed only displays that message. That is all that is on that page. If you go to http://arcims.ci.franklin.wi.us/cityoffranklin_gis/ you will enter the main site. The webmaster has seen fit to display the fact that IE 5.0 or later is required to view the site repeatedly but the mapping page works.

When I tried to download the "updated" versions on IE i get a message that states I am already running a newer version than the download. I did check the about IE info is as follows:
    Internet Explorer
    Version:6.0.2800.1106
    xpsp2.030422-1633
    Update Versions
    SPa: Q832894
    Q831167

I was able to open the GIS site you listed, however when I try to open the following site: http://arcims.ci.franklin.wi.us/cityoffranklin_gis/msg1.htm I keep getting the message that states I must be running IE 5.5 or greater. I tried opening this site at work today and it worked fine. The city of Franklin checked things out on their end and said it might be a little slow loading, but other than that it works fine.

I assume the problem must be on my end, but I sure can't figure out what the problem is. When I called Microsoft they said I had to contact Dell because they provided the software. Our free phone support with Dell has expired. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
