Is the network card enabled in the BIOS?

Yes the Network Card is turned on in the Bios Setup pages, and every time that I load the driver for the Broadcom Ethernet the system locks-up and I am forced to power the unit down, the the system freezes up after the system loads up to the desktop. The Driver is 440x 10/100 integrated controller.

I was thinking that Windows XP already has that driver built into the installation, Does it not work and you are trying to update the driver? Delete the NIC in Device manger and let windows install the default driver on a reboot.

This is the only other thing I can think of off the top of my head:

 

Extract the driver installation files to the c:\Dell\Drivers\XXXX folder. Then go there and locate the *.inf file and right click on it and select install.

 

OR

 

Go to device manager, select the Broadcom NIC, right click and go to properties >> update driver and point the update to the location C:\dell\drivers\XXXX folder where the drivers were extracted to.

 

This method has worked for me on occasion of difficult driver installs

 

You could have a failed integrated NIC also causing you this problem. Unfortunatly the dignostics do not help as all it does is check for the device present response. No actual testing is done.

I have tried that also and the same result happens it tries to load the driver and the same result happens, the device manager recognizes the NIC network card has been found and new hardware added just about 3/4 of the way thru the loading of the driver the system freezes up and I am forced to power the unit down and then I have to restart the system in the Safe Mode to diable the driver.
