I am unable to open internet explorer. I receive an error message stating the ntvdm cpu has encountered an
illegal instruction. I need to update it anyway. If I delete it and download a newer version will that resolve
the problem?
You don't delete IE from Windows XP, assuming that's what you have. Your error is an unusual one, usually caused by a DOS application. Go into Startup and remove unneeded things, then reboot.
Start, Run, Msconfig. Click on Startup Tab. Uncheck everything that this site says you can: www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php. When the computer reboots, check the box that says don't show me this again. If it's X or N, uncheck it.
I followed the instructions you posted but when I rebooted there was no box to check.
Then you didn't do it right. You stay with Selective Startup after unchecking all the things you want to uncheck, then reboot and check the box that says don't tell me again that it's selective startup.
