Media Player
Finally, I found a place to address my problem.
Message: Up until Friday, I have always been able to view my home video's with Media Player. I have always downloaded videos from my digital camera and saved them in a file titled "My Video's" and view them. I have also copied them to a blank cd and have been able to play them back. So last week, I copied
all of them to a cd and then deleted them from my hard drive. Then when I put in the cd and want to view the video's I get this message: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."
Never had this message before!!! The only thing I have done recently that's different , is that I downloaded Media Player ver. 10.0 with the updates. Very confusing! I put in the cd in, as I always have, and cannot view them and get the same error message. There has to be an answer and a way to view my video's on Media Player off the cd??? These are prescious video's and I have family coming over for the Holiday's and won't be able to show them. I guess I learned I need to always keep them on the hard drive....woa! Ok. You did a copy and paste from My Pictures to the CD. What CD burning software (and version number) do you have and what is your version of Windows XP and Service Pack? Can you see the list of images on the CD with Windows Explorer? We're narrowing down the cause of your problem so bear with us on these questions.

If you copied the files to CD, you're the smart one. Left on the hard drive, they could be lost forever or cost a ton to recover in the event of a hard drive electro-mechanical failure. Data recovery software is not cheap and neither is the time, environment, and labor to accomplish it. Hang onto those CDs. Even if they are corrupt (Which I doubt), they can be recovered, as can smart cards, compact flash, and memory sticks.
First, How did you burn the files to CD. Did you do it with Media Player 9? or with some other CD burning software. Therein may lie the problem.

Ok. Did your machine ship with SP2? Still need CD burning software and version; i.e., Roxio Easy CD Creator, Sonic RecordNow, Nero. Since you copied and pasted, I'm just wondering if you are using Roxio DirectCD, Nero InCD, Sonic DLA, or just Windows XP CD burning capability. I assume you haven't replaced the CD drive. Known issues with some of these and SP2 updates. Just last week had Quickbooks Pro 2005 suddenly stop backing up to CD R/W after SP2 update. That's why I want to know if you can see a list of the files with Windows Explorer.

You need to understand that I have always been able to view my video downloads from my hard drive, copied my video's to a cd and been able to view them and after I copied all of them to a cd, I cannot view them...something changed and it wasn't any action I took???? That is why it is very confusing!!!!!!!!!!!11
WinXP, and yes, I do see the files on the CD with Windows Explorer, but they are video files and while I see the file names when I try to view them I get the same old message, as I sent on my prior e-mail...something's wrong since I had a windows upgrade...I am really upset that I can no longer view my home video's...oh well!
- Thanks so much, but you are asking some things that I am not sure of...all I know is I have downloaded video's and pic's from my digital camera, saved them to my files and when I transferred them from the hard drive to a cd (using windows) I was always able to play them back, copy them etc. so. Thanks for trying to help. Don't understand what changed, except like I said I downloaded new programs, and maybe that's what happened. Should have never deleted them from my hard drive, they always played from there.????

Interesting question as to how did I copy them. I have done this so much in the past, went to My computer, My video's, selected all and copied them to the D: drive. I think my mistake was to remove them from my hard drive tho, because I could always view them from there. Why in the heck can't I view them from the cd I copied them to? Thanks so much for responding...
