Need help with a forgotten password

I hope someone can help me. My son placed a password on our PC and now has forgotten it. How can I by-pass the password to get into control panel to set up another user account?

I believe you will need to get Dell support involved with this.

log on to safe mode (tap f8 at start-up). go to control panel, user accounts, and delete the offending account.

I'm confused. Are you saying that you're simply asked for the XP username and password? Or is this before Windows loads...like a BIOS password?

If it's just the standard XP password you might try logging in as administrator with a blank password. If that works you can change the password on the primary account to whatever you want. Unfortunately, you've got to log in using an existing account so if the administrator password isn't blank and you don't know the passwords for any other existing accounts then there's no easy way in. Even safe mode requires credentials.

If it's a BIOS password you might call Dell support and ask if there's a way to reset the BIOS back to the defaults.

you can get by the bios password 2 ways..one is to use the jumpers on the MOBO to reset Bios to default settings..or you can remove MOBO battery and unplug the computer from the AC outlet  for about 2 hrs.....this is some cases will reset the bios to its default setting.........

reboot your pc and boot into safe mode (if the admin account wasnt passworded), when it boots into safe mode you should see a few log on options...yur regular account an a admin account...log onto windows with the admin account and then go to control panel and then user accounts...you can then remove the pass word from your regular account or delete that account and create a new one........or you can bite the bullett and reformat your machine....the above wont work if you had passworded the admnn account in the past...most people dont or forget to pass word it...

oops In see someone already posted this...but now you should go ahead a password the admin account for security reason....I pass word mine durring the instalation of windows.....
